Halflings (Halflings #1), by Heather Burch

Zonderkidz, ISBN 9780210728185, January 2012

The Halflings in this tale are not the little guys with furry feet familiar from, but rather half angel, half human. Half fallen angel. They don't belong in Heaven, or on Earth, and they don't want to be consigned to Hell. They're stuck betwixt and between, enlisted in the struggle for Good because if they don't, they'll be conscripted into the forces of Evil.

And they're just boys, teenagers--The Lost Boys.

These particular Lost Boys, Raven, Mace, and Vine, together with their guardian--guardian angel, literally--Will, have been sent to Missouri to protect Nikki--Nicole Youngblood, a teenager with a love of motorcycles and a talent for art. They don't know why; Heaven hasn't whispered that to Will. They only know that she's important for some reason, and she's already being hunted by hell hounds.

Nikki has her doubts about their story and is confused by her attraction to both "knight in shining armor" Mace and "bad boy" Raven. The boys are conflicted, too; falling in love with a human is what the Enemy wants them to do. And all that is just the sideshow to the major problem facing all of them.

Someone wants Nikki dead. A "dear friend" of her parents, whom they've never mentioned before, has suddenly turned up, and her parents are acting strangely. A small local lab belonging to a global R&D company burns down--and Dr. Richmond, Nikki's high school science teacher, used to work there. More and more odd and dangerous events close in on Nikki, and the choices get tougher for her, the Lost Boys, and Will.

It's an interesting world and an interesting story. In fairness I have to mention that in this book, the story stops rather than ends. The next book is scheduled for September, and we will have to wait at least that long for a resolution.

Nevertheless, recommended.

I received a free electronic galley of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.
