Mma Ramotswe is back, and she and Mma Makutsi are facing some real crises in their extended family this time. Mma Potokwane has been dismissed from her position as matron of the orphan farm, for opposing changes she rightly views as bad for the children. Fanwell, the reliable, hard-working apprentice at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, did some moonlighting work with an old school acquaintance, and is now in serious trouble with the law, defended by the worst lawyer in Gabarone. Mma Makutsi and her new husband, Phuti Radiphuti, are building their dream house, but their builder is rude to her, condescending to Phuti, and may not be entirely honest.
Are they all headed for disaster?
It's another visit with familiar and well-loved characters, and Mma Ramotswe's patient determination and inquiring mind, Mma Makutsi's odd combination of self-absorption with loyalty and decency, Phuti's gentle goodness, and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni's mostly silent but unshakable devotion to his personal and work family will have to carry them through. In one sense there's not much new here; we know these characters and their world. That's a large part of the pleasure, though; we know these characters and we care about them, and even Charlie is never allowed to sink to a caricature.
And this time, the two lady detectives (indeed, the only private detectives) of Botswana receive a visit from someone they've admired from afar for years.
