Tantor Audio, January 2017 (original publication May 2014)
DI Nikki Galena and Detective Sergeant Joseph Easter have been working together for several years now. They're comfortable working partners and comfortable neighbors.
Their latest case is anything but comfortable.
One of the outbuildings on Nikki's property is quite professionally torched, and it might have spread to her house if Joseph hadn't woken up to an unidentified sound and happened to see the smoke early on. Cat and a young officer newly assigned to the team are run down quite intentionally by a truck. The young officer is killed, and Cat is badly injured with a real risk of severe scarring on her face. Dave Harris discovers the carefully accumulated savings, which he relies on to pay for his wife's expensive care, has been drained by a hacker.
Each member of their team is being attacked in turn, in ways particularly painful to each of them.
Police can expect to be hated by those they've locked up, or by the families of thipose they've locked up, but who hates the entire team this much, and this personally?
And of the possible suspects, who has all the specialized skills necessary?
I haven't even mentioned the locked room murder that they initially think is their major case, with the arson on Nikki's property a distraction.
Ellis continues to develop the characters and their relationships. Greenborough has changed and developed, too.
If she's going anywhere with the relationship between Nikki and Joseph, though, something should happen soon.
It's a nicely intricate plot, and I just deleted what I was going to say there. It risked being a spoiler.
Recommended.
I bought this audiobook.
