This is another re-listen.
It's a novella set between the fifth and sixth books of the Detective D.D. Warren series. D.D. is seven months pregnant, and currently confined to desk duty. which drives her bananas. She's also hesitating over moving in with Alex, whom she loves, and who is the father of her unborn child, but she's terrified of slipping out of her police career and becoming "just a wife and mother."
And while she's sitting at the police station reception desk, a movie producer walks in, hoping to find a police detective who is open to being a technical consultant on the movie he's making. He had one, but that one, a retired officer, has apparently taken off.
After some back and forth, D.D. decides, why not? That evening she heads to the location of the movie shoot, a cemetery. On the way, she gets a call from her supervisor, who had approved this earlier, with some news. She decides to go ahead anyway. She's careful not to actually sign the contract, though.
What follows is an intriguing story with a not entirely expected conclusion. Recommended.
