Penric is traveling, this time on what, for him, almost qualifies as a vacation. He's seeking a former saint's hermitage, and the temple that grew up around it, and later was abandoned. In the town of Berbak, at an inn, he meets a friendly and helpful young man, and they agree to travel together.
Except the young man, Rozak, is not honest, and does not have altogether friendly intentions. Penric, and his demon, Desdemona, are aware of that, and confident of their ability to handle him, and even a few fellow thieves. And Penric, would like, if possible, to save the young man's soul.
Before the night is gone, however, the thief, Rozak, has been found by the gang he abruptly quit. Penric and Desdemona are aware of the frightening visit they paid to Rozak during the night, but not entirely certain what's going on. Six bandits is more than they are entirely comfortable with, but probably they can handle it.
Rozak thinks Penric is a gullible idiot, maybe a scribe, definitely hunting a treasure. He's completely unaware of Desdemona, and Penric's magical skills.
It's an interesting relationship, with Rozak getting more puzzled by Penric with each passing hour. Each of the traveling companions is careful not to reveal anything of their true nature and intentions to the other, though one is far more successful at that than the other.
When they reach the abandoned hermitage, with more bandits than either expected close behind, they both have some hard decisions to make.
Another excellent Penric and Desdemona adventure.
